David’s Inspiration
The painting was commissioned, and I was thrilled to do it because I watch and love “Peaky Blinders.’’ It is a beautiful series, beautifully shot, beautifully written. All the female characters are strong. And we are almost at the end. The sixth season, which has not come out yet, will be the final season on television.
There are 14 characters from the series in the painting, six members of the Shelby crime family and the villains they face-off against just after the First World War in Birmingham, England. Winston Churchill, who sent in investigators to clean up Birmingham and get rid of the gangsters, is also shown.
The setting is The Garrison, the Shelby family pub and one of their few legitimate businesses. The whole painting starts with Tommy Shelby, the family patriarch, sitting in the middle. It starts with his eyes, his piercing blue eyes. And then it kind of swirls around from there into the basic key characters who make up the series. The six family members surround him.
Left to right and top to bottom, the characters are: Sir Oswald Moseley (Sam Claflin), Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody), Billy Kimber (Charlie Creed-Miles), John Shelby (Joe Cole), Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson), Ada Shelby (Sophie Rundle), Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), Grace Shelby Annabelle Wallis), “Aunt Polly’’ Gray (Helen McCrory), Michael Gray (Finn Cole) , Aberama Gold (Aidan Gillen), Darby Sabini (Noah Taylor), Winston Churchill and Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy).
Fans will find reminders of plot points hidden in the painting, look for the black hand Christmas card, a red right hand and a razor blade hiding in a peaked flat cap, among others.
